River and Hill 60 Walk

Tiny Home

Orange Walk – 5km

7km if you include part of the Yellow Walk

This is a lovely and easy walk which combines the delights of the river with an option to also discover the mysteriously named Hill 60, simply follow the ORANGE way markers from Tiny Home.

Here are our directions and photographs of key points and highlights to look out for on the route.

Enjoy!

Distance: 5km

Level: Easy

This is an easy walk taking you round haugh land (Scottish name for the flat land near a river) on grass margins around arable fields close to the river with one section well within view of the river.

During June and up to mid-July, you would be better to walk in the tractor marks close to the side of the crop. The grass margins which are for conservation get quite overgrown but do get cut mid-July.

Leave Tiny Home going down the hill to the road. Cross over the road and go through the right-hand gate of the three.

Follow the hedge down to the bottom of the field through the gate in the corner.

Turn right onto the tar road. Walk past the cottages on the left. About 30 metres further on there is a track bearing half left, leaving the tar road follow that.

You will enter a field and turn left and proceed round the side. Follow this grass margin round for about 500 metres.

In the far corner there is a wooden gate that you can go through to get down to the water’s edge.

This is a nice spot to sit, either on the pebbles or bank and watch and wait for the birds around the river. Maybe play skimming stones on the river.

Another great place for the dogs to paddle and swim.

Leave the river through the same gate and proceed left following the grass margin.

Go through another gateway into another field but still following the grass margin.  Here you are a lot closer to the river so watch out for wild Mallard ducks and Dippers darting up the river as well as Herons. Depending on the time of year Herons can be seen in the middle of the fields so keep an eye out.

Keep an eye out for Kingfishers sitting on a branch near the water’s edge. You might just see a dart of turquoise as it skims along the river.

In the spring there is an abundance of wild garlic amongst the trees on the riverbank. Feel free to pick some to go on top of your Pizza!

Follow the margin to the next corner where you turn left down through a gateway then go right.

When you reach this point, you have 2 options.

Option 1

Take the gate to your right and then go hard right, follow the margin and proceed past Hill 60.

Option 2

When you reach this point, you can go straight on through this gate and follow the river right round till you reach the point shown in the photo below. Join onto the grass track and turn right where you go forward through a gate and onto another grass margin.

This detour is a really nice walk near the river.

However, we do not recommend it between July and October as it is very overgrown.

When you reach the gate, this is where you rejoin the walk turn left heading to Hill 60.

Follow this round passing a large, formed mound, Hill 60. This is thought to be a territorial lookout tower to prevent people crossing the river.  One of ‘The Twelve Towers of Rule’.

Nowadays it is called Hill 60, after the battle in WW1 where the occupier of Hallrule Farmhouse had fought.

Continue past the mound and follow the grass margin up the hill through another field up to the top corner, go left towards the gate where a track leads out onto the road.

Here you can go right back towards Tiny Home following the road.

Or you can go left following the signs for the Yellow Walk and Brown Walk. About 100 metres to the left, you will reach some high boarding on the left.

Here you can go right up the farm track following the Yellow Walk or you can go straight on for the Brown Walk.
